Pesquisadores japoneses encontraram uma bact\u00e9ria capaz de decompor a mol\u00e9cula de tereftalato de polietileno (PET), pl\u00e1stico usado em grande escala em garrafas e outras embalagens. A Ideonella sakaiensis teria evolu\u00eddo em uma f\u00e1brica de reciclagem em Sakai, no sul do Jap\u00e3o, e usa o pl\u00e1stico como a principal fonte de energia.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>No final de abril, pesquisadores da <a href=\"http:\/\/www.port.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Universidade de Porsmouth<\/a>, no Reino Unido, junto com o Departamento de Energia dos Estados Unidos, anunciaram que conseguiram modificar uma enzima produzida por esta bact\u00e9ria, deixando-a mais efetiva para a decomposi\u00e7\u00e3o do pl\u00e1stico.<\/p>\n<p>Com um raio-X de brilho dez bilh\u00f5es de vezes mais forte do que o Sol, eles conseguiram criar um modelo tridimensional de alta resolu\u00e7\u00e3o da enzima.<\/p>\n<p>A bact\u00e9ria demora alguns dias, mas a enzima produzida poderia ser usada em grande escala e com mais rapidez. Por\u00e9m, faltam ainda algumas melhoras para que a enzima possa funcionar em temperaturas altas, quando o PET fica viscoso.<\/p>\n<p>Um dos autores do estudo, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.port.ac.uk\/institute-of-biological-and-biomedical-sciences\/molecular-biophysics\/john-mcgeehan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">John McGeehan<\/a>, afirmou que com o descobrimento estamos mais perto de salvar o meio ambiente das embalagens pl\u00e1sticas. Mais de oito milh\u00f5es de toneladas de pl\u00e1stico s\u00e3o despejadas nos oceanos por ano. Como se sabe, as garrafas de pl\u00e1stico podem levar s\u00e9culos para se degradar e atualmente poluem rios, mares e amea\u00e7am a vida de diversas esp\u00e9cies animais.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTodos devemos desempenhar um papel significativo\u201d, afirma o professor McGeehan.
