Trata-se dos birradicais de Criegee (ou \u201cbiradicals of Rudolf Criegee\u201d), que podem ser obtidos atrav\u00e9s da combina\u00e7\u00e3o de oxig\u00eanio e g\u00e1s metano, e seriam uma pe\u00e7a chave no trabalho atual na redu\u00e7\u00e3o da contamina\u00e7\u00e3o atmosf\u00e9rica e no aquecimento global. Comprovou-se que os birradicais de Criegee neutralizam mais r\u00e1pido do que se pensava as mol\u00e9culas de diferentes agentes contaminantes como o di\u00f3xido de nitrog\u00eanio e o di\u00f3xido de sulfeto.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nOs pesquisadores desenvolveram teorias sobre os birradicais de Criegee desde a d\u00e9cada de 1950, acreditava-se que eram subst\u00e2ncias qu\u00edmicas liberadas pelas plantas, que ajudam a controlar os gases contaminantes da atmosfera, contribuindo na forma\u00e7\u00e3o de nuvens. Estas mol\u00e9culas conhecidas como \u201cintermedi\u00e1rios\u201d qu\u00edmicos deveriam -em teoria- ter uma influ\u00eancia significativa no clima, mas s\u00f3 agora, com uma equipe de laborat\u00f3rio moderna e reconhecida como a \u201csynchrotron\u201d, \u00e9 que foi poss\u00edvel observar diretamente as intera\u00e7\u00f5es entre os\u00a0 birradicais de Criegee e as part\u00edculas de \u00f3xido n\u00edtrico, di\u00f3xido de nitrog\u00eanio e di\u00f3xido de enxofre.
