Este \u201csequestro\u201d pode ser vital para a atmosfera j\u00e1 que reduz o impacto provocado pelos gases de efeito estufa.<\/h2>\n<p>Al\u00e9m da quantidade de carbono acumulado, estes ecossistemas oferecem duas vantagens porque conseguem capturar rapidamente e mant\u00ea-lo preso durante milh\u00f5es de anos nas \u00e1guas marinhas.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Al\u00e9m dos mares e oceanos, outros ecossistemas h\u00famidos como s\u00e3o o p\u00e2ntano ou o mangue. No caso do mangue, por exemplo, ele consegue armazenar at\u00e9 10 vezes mais carbono que um bosque terrestre.<\/p>\n<p>A diretora de iniciativas marinhas estrat\u00e9gicas da organiza\u00e7\u00e3o Conserva\u00e7\u00e3o Internacional,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservation.org\/experts-list\/emily-pidgeon-phd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Emily Pidgeon<\/a>, explicou em entrevista <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/mundo\/noticias-51200868\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">para a BBC<\/a> que nestes lugares as \u201ccondi\u00e7\u00f5es de n\u00edveis baixos de oxig\u00eanio no solo, debaixo da \u00e1gua, conseguem reter o carbono desde s\u00e9culos at\u00e9 mil\u00eanios\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Ela destaca ainda que recuperar estes espa\u00e7os \u00e9 uma tarefa dif\u00edcil, que pode levar anos e s\u00e9culos.<\/p>\n<p>Por isso, \u00e9 ainda mais importante preservar estes ecossistemas. Como indica <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservation.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Conserva\u00e7\u00e3o Internacional<\/a>, desde o ano 1940, j\u00e1 perdemos a metade do manguezais do mundo. Quando estes ambientes se destroem, uma grande quantidade de CO2 \u00e9 liberada para a atmosfera, aumentando ainda mais a quantidade de gases de efeito estufa.<\/p>\n<p>Muitas vezes, a causa do desaparecimento destes ecossistemas est\u00e1 associada \u00e0s iniciativas humanas como por exemplo, a constru\u00e7\u00e3o de estanques e represas para o cultivo de peixes e camar\u00f5es.
