As baixas temperaturas nesta regi\u00e3o dispararam um pico no uso de energia el\u00e9trica, mas, felizmente, o sistema de energia e\u00f3lica evitou que se produzissem cortes no fluxo de energia ao fornecer o fluxo de eletricidade necess\u00e1rio para atender a crescente demanda energ\u00e9tica.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Algumas usinas geradoras de energia falharam durante o v\u00f3rtice polar e em algumas localidades como Tennessee e Carolina do Sul ocorreram cortes de energia programados para evitar um colapso do sistema el\u00e9trico devido ao repentino aumento da demanda.<\/p>\n<p>A falta de fornecimento el\u00e9trico e as baixas temperaturas que ocorreram durante este fen\u00f4meno s\u00e3o uma combina\u00e7\u00e3o mortal que poderia ter matado milhares de pessoas nos Estados Unidos.<\/p>\n<p>Na hora de enfrentar o v\u00f3rtice polar, o sistema de energia e\u00f3lica do Texas tinha a capacidade de gerar eletricidade para seis milh\u00f5es de lares, permitindo salvar a crise. Deve-se considerar que, at\u00e9 o ano de 2012, o Texas tinha instalado mais de 12 mil megawatts de energia e\u00f3lica, seguido apenas da Calif\u00f3rnia, que possui 5.549MW.<\/p>\n<p>Perigo<br \/>\nAs condi\u00e7\u00f5es clim\u00e1ticas extremas tornaram-se cada vez mais frequentes e calcula-se que, entre 2003 e 2012, foram produzidos cerca de 675 cortes no fluido el\u00e9trico, com um custo que oscila entre 33 milh\u00f5es e 18 bilh\u00f5es de d\u00f3lares por ano, de acordo com um relat\u00f3rio publicado pelo Departamento de Energia dos Estados Unidos.
