Os pesquisadores analisaram a din\u00e2mica da concorr\u00eancia entre as algas presentes nessa regi\u00e3o, algumas das quais constroem, para sua prote\u00e7\u00e3o, uma camada de carbonato de c\u00e1lcio. \u00c0 medida que o oceano absorve maior quantidade de di\u00f3xido de carbono suas \u00e1guas se tornam mais \u00e1cidas, afetando diretamente todos os organismos que possuem exoesqueleto ou se protegem com forma\u00e7\u00f5es de c\u00e1lcio.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Os cientistas estudaram a evolu\u00e7\u00e3o das esp\u00e9cies que habitam a regi\u00e3o por 12 anos, e coletaram dados que permitem criar estat\u00edsticas para identificar os fatores que afetam a biodiversidade da regi\u00e3o.<\/p>\n<p>Nos experimentos pr\u00e9vios, uma das esp\u00e9cies, o Pseudolithophyllum muricatum, era a esp\u00e9cie dominante nessa regi\u00e3o, conseguindo monopolizar algumas regi\u00f5es em at\u00e9 100%, deixando de fora outras tr\u00eas esp\u00e9cies. No entanto, os experimentos recentes mostram que o P. muricatum, antes esp\u00e9cie dominante, agora n\u00e3o consegue monopolizar 25% do espa\u00e7o, e n\u00e3o se identificou uma esp\u00e9cie dominante, pois todas mant\u00eam uma distribui\u00e7\u00e3o similar.<\/p>\n<p>Anteriormente, a supremacia da esp\u00e9cie P. muricatum devia-se \u00e0 sua capacidade para gerar um exoesqueleto mais forte e sofisticado.
