Por exemplo, uma sacola de supermercado rotulada como biodegrad\u00e1vel precisaria expor-se a uma temperatura de 50\u00b0C para decompor-se por completo em \u00e1gua, di\u00f3xido de carbono e metano em um tempo razo\u00e1vel.<\/p>\n<p><strong>O oceano \u00e9 um dos ambientes mais afetados pela contamina\u00e7\u00e3o gerada pelo pl\u00e1stico.<\/strong> No mar, apresentam-se condi\u00e7\u00f5es espec\u00edficas que desaceleram o processo de fragmenta\u00e7\u00e3o e decomposi\u00e7\u00e3o. Quando os refugos pl\u00e1sticos cobrem-se por sedimentos, inundam-se em \u00e1gua ou cobrem-se de material org\u00e2nico e inorg\u00e2nico, sua taxa de fragmenta\u00e7\u00e3o reduz-se rapidamente. Os materiais de pl\u00e1stico, sejam estes biodegrad\u00e1veis ou n\u00e3o, permanecer\u00e3o no oceano por muito tempo.<\/p>\n<p>Os pl\u00e1sticos <strong>biodegrad\u00e1veis necessitam de certas condi\u00e7\u00f5es espec\u00edficas para sua desintegra\u00e7\u00e3o, e tais condi\u00e7\u00f5es n\u00e3o se garantem na natureza.<\/strong> As condi\u00e7\u00f5es nas quais os pol\u00edmeros \u201cbiodegrad\u00e1veis\u201d realmente poderiam decompor-se variam, e por esta raz\u00e3o necessitam-se indica\u00e7\u00f5es precisas sobre o que significam os termos \u201cdegrad\u00e1vel\u201d ou \u201cbiodegrad\u00e1vel\u201d, e descrever o impacto que estes materiais poderiam ter na natureza.<\/p>\n<p>O estudo tamb\u00e9m analisa o impacto dos pl\u00e1sticos oxibiodegrad\u00e1veis, enriquecidos com um elemento oxidante que acelera sua fragmenta\u00e7\u00e3o. Este tipo de pl\u00e1sticos representa uma amea\u00e7a para o entorno marinho, pois, inclusive depois da fragmenta\u00e7\u00e3o, podem permanecer no oceano por cinco anos, podendo ser tragados por diversos organismos.<\/p>\n<p>Os pl\u00e1sticos biodegrad\u00e1veis exp\u00f5em tamb\u00e9m um desafio para o processo de reciclagem de materiais. De acordo com Peter Kershaw, um dos autores do estudo da UNEP, <strong>combinar os pl\u00e1sticos biodegrad\u00e1veis com objetos de pl\u00e1stico convencionais em um processo de reciclagem pode comprometer as propriedades do pl\u00e1stico original.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>O documento da UNEP conclui que, ao avaliar a evid\u00eancia atual, determinou-se que <strong>\u201cos pl\u00e1sticos biodegrad\u00e1veis n\u00e3o teriam um papel significativo na redu\u00e7\u00e3o da polui\u00e7\u00e3o marinha\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Parte do pl\u00e1stico utilizado nas cidades \u00e9 transportado at\u00e9 o mar por rios polu\u00eddos, estes refugos acumulam-se no oceano at\u00e9 ocupar espa\u00e7os enormes que poderiam simular um continente.
